New Paragraph
With hedge laying there are many styles to choose from.
Hedgelaying styles vary from region to region with their own particular design , however in recent years I have been trying different techniques to enhance the biodiversity through a conservation style laid hedge. These are wider and form the foundations for an 'A' shaped hedge, they are thicker and incorporated a lot more deadwood arisings in the body of the hedge to provide a heavy barrier to help small nesting birds.
A well laid hedge will promote new healthy growth from the stools and should not need re laying for 20 or so years with good aftercare.
They will also provide an extremely robust barrier, which was their original purpose by keeping livestock from escaping from their enclosures but these days they are also extremely good at keeping out unwanted visitors both in the countryside and urban areas.
Appropriately managed hedges will also provide secure nesting sites, pollen, nectar and food for the British wildlife and wild game.
There is nothing more satisfying than to see the English countryside returned to life by healthy hedgerows that are abundant with wildlife.
If you would like further advice on the best course of action for tackling hedges, or if you already have a plan and want someone to come and do all the hard work for you, please get in touch. I’m never happier than when I’m hedgelaying so I’d love to be involved in whatever you’re planning.
