Water Management

I’ve been involved in water and soil management for 30 years,  especially educating people on the merits of good soil management which in turn helps to prevent the degradation of water bodies and courses through diffuse agricultural and direct urban pollution.

Long before environmental water management became the watch word of today I had been implementing and surveying the wildlife associated with water, plus also advising on local water catchments.

Benefits of Water Management

Water course supports wetland plants and insects, whilst the vegetation on the river banks provide areas of wet grassland rich with wildflowers, insects, birds and animals. In particularly in arable areas, ditches can often be the only wet habitats, making their existence all the more significant.

It’s important to bear all this in mind when clearing vegetation, as parts of the any water body or course will need to be left undisturbed to keep a refuge habitat for wildlife. The time of year is also hugely important as well – late summer or early autumn tends to be the best time to undertake work as it will minimise disturbances to wildlife as well as provide easier access due to drier ground conditions in early autumn.
