Wildflower Meadows Management

Another great passion of mine is the restoration and management of wildflower meadows, pastures and sheep walks for wildlife.

My knowledge that I have acquired has ranged from working in Britain,  Estonia and Romania although the many other countries that I have visited have also given me a deep understanding of plants in general.

Romania still has some pristine grasslands and the mosaic patches of mown meadows provides pollen and nectar throughout the spring and summer while the woodland meadows in Estonia which had fallen out of use are now being actively managed for their great variety of meadow flora.

Benefits of Wildflower Meadows Management

The pace of agricultural innovation and urban development in the 20th century has seen  a sharp decline in the variety of wildflowers in our countryside. However environmental concerns over the last few decades have led to a surge of  interest in wildflower habitats. A wildflower meadow, with it’s diverse mix of plants, attracts a vast assortment of wildlife and nurtures a flourishing ecosystem.

A small wildflower meadow in an urban setting can be an invaluable teaching aid for children, allowing them to safely study the natural world in a controlled habitat. As the seasons progress and the flowers bud and bloom and insects come and go, the changing assortment of colours provides a beautiful visual aid to the passage of time.

Wildflower meadows are increasingly being incorporated into new housing developments, bringing a piece of the countryside into an urban setting and encouraging the local residents to get outside and enjoy the peace and tranquillity. It’s incredibly gratifying to see humans and animals co-existing together and supporting one another.

If you’re looking to incorporate a wildflower meadow into a project you’re involved in, or if you’d like to transform a forgotten piece of land into a thriving sanctuary for wildlife, please get in touch and I can help you.
